ABOUT CORONAVIRUS

Dear pupils,
You will know that  due to the coronavirus we must stay at home. It is difficult to know how long the emergency measures will go on for but we hope that things do go back to normal soon. Here you are some things you need to know about it:

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases.  Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.  In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

GRACE VAN DER WIELEN -LANGUAGE ASSISTANT

My name is Grace van der Wielen. I am twenty-two years old and I come from Scotland. I was born in South Africa, but I moved to Scotland with my family when I was twelve. I have four brothers – one older and three younger – who are all still studying in Scotland. I studied English Literature at the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland’s capital city. After graduating in July, I decided to become an English Language Assistant in Spain to broaden my horizons and experience a new culture. I enjoy reading, writing, and learning new languages. I already feel at home in Asturias because it is has some similarities to Scotland – the landscape, the bagpipes, and the rain!

THOMAS MISTRY, OUR NEW LANGUAGE ASSISTANT

My name is Thomas (or Tom), I'm an exchange student from London. I am 22 years old and I study international relations and spanish at the university of Leeds, in the north of England. I have 2 brothers and 11 cousins.

During my free time I enjoy playing many sports- especially football, kickboxing (a martial art), rugby, athletics, swimming and skiing. My favourite football team is Arsenal and in Spain I like Barcelona. I went to the Estadio Carlos Tartiere to watch a match of Real Oviedo against Cadiz (which Oviedo won!)

Other pastimes I like include to draw sketches, go walking in nature, read books and to watch films and T.V programmes. I really enjoy comedies. Furthermore I love to listen to music, I enjoy garage, DnB, hip-hop and some reggeaton, amongst others.

To eat and to cooka are two of may favourite things to do. My favourite Spanish foods are "croquetas de jamón", "paella" and many types of "tapas". My favourite English dish is Indian curry (which is also the nations favourite dish!)

When I was younger, I wanted to be an artist. My favourite subjects  were maths and Design. Now I find politics very inter.esting.

I thought I was well-prepared when I came to Oviedo, although I was very surprised to see snow in Oviedo a few weeks ago- in fact I fell on my behind!!!

THANKSGIVING DAY 2018

Thanksgiving in the United States is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated the second Monday in October. Families prepare meal similar to the meal prepared by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag 400 years ago. It is time for counting the blessings we have received during the year and for spending time with family and friends.

WELCOME TO OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT
Hi! My name is Lindsey and I’m the English Language Assistant at Buenavista I this year! I’m from Newport Beach, California (USA) and have been living in northern Spain for two years. My hometown is about an hour and a half away from Los Angeles, and most people spend their days at the beach (when they’re not working, of course!).

The weather is usually warm and true changes in seasons are nonexistent. Some of the typical foods from my city are açaí bowls (delicious smoothies with fruit toppings and granola) and Mexican food (fish tacos are my favorite!). Since California is close to the US-Mexican border, many people speak both English and Spanish, which means we have a lot of diversity there.

Some fun facts about me are:
1) I’ve never lived in a city without the ocean
2) I have an “old lady” hobby - I love to knit
3) My favorite color is purple
4) I’ve read all the Harry Potter books twice (and am starting to read them in Spanish next!)
5) My favorite TV series are: Friends, Breaking Bad, and Modern Family

I’m excited to start my third year as a Language Assistant and can’t wait to share more of my adventures with you throughout the year!

Saludos,
Lindsey
